Compact but oozing with style.

The Toyota Electric Pick-Up (EPU) compact truck concept will be making its first-ever appearance at the 2023 Japan Mobility Show and it might be previewing a production model that could face the Ford Maverick and Hyundai Santa Cruz.

Like the Maverick and Santa Cruz, the EPU concept is built on a monocoque chassis which means its chassis and body are integrated into a single shell. Contrast this to the Toyota Hilux where the truck body sits over a chassis.

The Toyota EPU concept has a length of 5,070mm, a width of 1,910mm, and a height of 1,710mm. Its wheelbase spans 3,350mm. Those figures mean it is almost as large as the Maverick, the Blue Oval’s compact truck contender.

Style-wise, the pickup truck mostly sports smooth lines. Its front end gets a pair of LED headlamp clusters which are integrated cleanly with an LED daytime running light bar. The concept also gets a closed-off grille and a sloping bonnet.

From the side, the concept does get a robust feel thanks to its width, its plastic black claddings, bulgy wheel fenders, and its set of knobby all-terrain tires. The truck’s rear portion likewise comes with a roof-mounted spoiler and an LED taillight bar.

One will also notice that the rear axle is mounted nearly towards the end of the rear section which is not typical on other truck models. The truck also gets a folding tailgate which can extend the bed while being able to keep cargo from falling out as the vehicle travels.

The interior of the EPU concept looks minimalist. The dashboard gets two parts: a sloped angular upper black portion, and a lower flat part with a deep indent which could function as a tray. A center storage tray is positioned in the middle.

The driver-side of the concept truck gets a yoke-type steering wheel and a fully digital gauge cluster that is overlapped by the central touchscreen display. Between the two is a rectangular section where some physical buttons for the vehicle functions are placed. This includes the push-to-start button, auto-hold function, and gear selector.

No mechanical specs for the truck concept were shared for now, but as hinted by its name, it is a fully electric model. Toyota also didn’t share when a production model will roll out, but it was hinted last year that the brand is currently studying the possibility of introducing a miniaturized version of its Hilux truck
