It has waived more than P230M since last year.

San Miguel Corporation (SMC) reported that it has waived more than Php 230-million in toll fees for more than 10,000 medical frontliners. The temporary suspension of toll fees is part of SMC’s support for medical workers amid the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic.

A way of SMC to express its gratitude towards frontliners

As a recap, the company first waived the toll fees for medical frontliners last March 2020 when the virus first broke out in the country. Medical workers including nurses, doctors, and medical and laboratory technicians residing in Metro Manila and the nearby provinces benefit from the exemption.

“We started this program last year, to show our appreciation and support for our hero medical workers who risk their lives every day to save others, despite the threats of the COVID-19. More than one year has passed and they have accomplished so much in the fight against the pandemic,” said SMC President Ramon Ang.

The temporary suspension of toll fees for frontliners, however, is not the only effort SMC has done to support the country’s healthcare system. The company recently allotted Php 1-billion for free vaccination for its 70,000 employees and its extended workforce. Over 100 doctors and nurses were hired to execute the vaccination.

Toll fees for medical workers are waived indefinitely

As of this writing, the duration of the toll-free scheme for medical frontliners is still unclear. It seems like SMC will continue this campaign until the country is finally COVID-19 free. Just like what Ang said last December 2020, the company will not stop showing its appreciation for those fighting the coronavirus.

“We will not stop looking for opportunities to help our fellow Filipinos. I believe if the private and government sectors continue to come together and pool resources and efforts, we can do even more good for our country and people, save more lives, and recover more quickly from the pandemic,” concluded Ang.

SMC continues to give back to the community

SMC manages expressways that use Autosweep RFID. These expressways include the South Luzon Expressway (SLEX), Metro Manila Skyway System (Skyway), NAIA Expressway (NAIAX), Southern Tagalog Arterial Road (STAR Tollway), Muntinlupa-Cavite Expressway (MCX), and Tarlac-Pangasinan-La Union Expressway (TPLEX).
