It’s another extension due to COVID-19

Once again, the Land Transportation Office is extending the validity of car registrations. This time, all vehicles with plates ending in 2 will have until March 31, 2022 to renew their registrations. The extension will be in effect nationwide.

The official Facebook post from LTO announcing the recent car registration extension

As with the previous extensions of car registration deadlines, this recent one is still in consideration of the current community quarantine being imposed in many parts of the country due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Of note, the LTO has been extending the validity of car registrations, driver’s licenses, and even medical certificates issued by accredited clinics (requirement for driver’s license renewal) since last year. These extensions were also carried out due to the pandemic.

As of February 10, 2022, the Department of Health has logged 3,574 COVID-19 cases which presents a significant decrease compared to the past few weeks. Some regions like the NCR are now classed as low risk due to their lower hospital bed utilization rate, meaning there are fewer patients that need to be confined.

Then again, it only makes sense for LTO and other government agencies to remain vigilant as the virus is still very much present, and other regions still classed as high risk. So, this newest extension of the car registration validity might lessen the chances of people crowding the many LTO branches around the country, as it can help spread out the instances one needs to visit a branch.

These extensions have been going on since last year

There were also several questions posted by netizens on the official post announcing the car registration extension. One such query was regarding cars that are yet to be issued an official plate number. For these vehicles, the LTO says that one should refer to the date indicated on the registration’s official receipt (OR).

The LTO also reminds those with cars whose plate numbers ending in “1” that they have until February 28, 2022 to renew their registrations.
