The Nissan GT-R is regarded as one of the most adored nameplates due to its impressive performance. Since its debut in 2007, the GT-R has displayed serious performance capabilities that bolstered its nickname Godzilla. This title was given to the sports car as it is a monster from Japan that destroyed its competition.
Nissan GT-R Nismo vs Tesla Model 3 [Video: Wheels]
But in today’s time where the capabilities of electric vehicles (EVs) are rapidly gaining traction, the GT-R could face competition that brings something different to the table. EVs offer an instant torque delivery, giving this type of vehicle an insanely quick acceleration from a standstill.
To put that to the test, YouTube channel Wheels posted a video showing a drag race between the Nissan GT-R Nismo and Tesla Model 3 EV fastback. The 3.8-liter twin-turbo VR38DETT V6 engine of the GT-R will have to overcome the challenge of beating the American EV in a 1/4 mile (0.40 km) drag strip.
The Tesla Model 3 had a better start thanks to the driver’s good reaction time. However, the Nissan GT-R managed to fly past the EV in no time, finishing in 11.19 seconds at 198 km/h. Meanwhile, the Model 3 posted a 1/4 mile time of 12.11 seconds at 182 km/h.
Nissan GT-R vs Tesla Model 3
In Tesla’s defense, the Model 3 seen in the video is probably not the Performance trim, which can be a concern for others considering that the GT-R is on its Nismo form. The Tesla Model 3 Performance boasts a zero to 100 km/h time of 3.1 seconds and a top speed of 260 km/h. That is better performance-wise than the mid-spec Long Range’s 4.2-second zero to 100 km/h rating and 233 km/h top speed.
Regardless, both the GT-R and Model 3 were at the top of their games on the drag strip. The GT-R managed to take on the challenge of the new competitor despite its relatively old age.
