The local subcompact sedan segment has been quite busy this year. Toyota Motor Philippines (TMP) introduced the facelifted Vios last July, and months later Honda Cars Phillippines Inc. (HCPI) launched its counterpunch by releasing the all-new City. Now, Volkswagen Philippines announced that the brand is all set for another subcompact sedan slugfest.
2020 Volkswagen Santana GTS Review: This or a crossover
Volkswagen PH said that the new and upgraded Santana is coming to the market next year. The brand added that the 2021 Santana is packed with “more features for customers to enjoy.” However, Volkswagen PH has yet to put in detail the new features that are integrated into the 2021 Santana.

Although, the brand shared some teaser images of its upcoming subcompact sedan. From the looks of it, the new and upgraded Volkswagen Santana will come with a sunroof as well as a side mirror that’s integrated with a turn signal. But, the said features do not come as a surprise since those are already offered in the current top-spec Santa available in the Philippines. The second teaser image shows the Santana’s grille, which looks similar to the current locally available model.

The teaser images suggest that the upcoming PH-spec 2021 Santana could come with the same exterior styling. More importantly, it indicates that the new upgraded feature of the Santana could be found under the hood.

To put things in perspective, all variants of the Chinese-spec Santana comes with a 1.5-liter gasoline engine that delivers 110 hp and 145 Nm of torque. The said engine can be mated to either a five-speed manual or a six-speed automatic transmission. Now, Volkswagen PH sources its vehicles from China. With that in mind, expect that all variants of the PH-bound 2021 Santana will have a 1.5-liter gasoline engine. This is also an indication that Volkswagen PH could no longer offer the Volkswagen Santana with a 1.4-liter gasoline engine in 2021.

2021 Volkswagen Santana will soon be available in PH
In terms of pricing, the current PH-spec Santana comes with a starting price of Php 686,000. On the other hand, the entry-level Chinese-spec 2021 Santana is priced at 86,900 yuan (around Php 640,500). Volkswagen PH said that the upcoming local spec Santana will still come with an affordable price range.
