The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) said that the two-day number coding scheme is not yet implemented as of this writing.
The MMDA is looking for ways to manage traffic
For a short recap, the proposed two-day number coding scheme aims to reduce traffic along EDSA by as much as 40 percent by limiting more vehicles depending on the last digit of their license plate. This is currently being studied as the volume of vehicles has increased significantly since the implementation of the Alert Level 1. See the restrictions under the revised number coding scheme below:
- Plate numbers ending in 1,2: Monday, Wednesday
- Plate numbers ending in 3,4: Monday, Thursday
- Plate numbers ending in 5,6: Tuesday, Thursday
- Plate numbers ending in 7,8: Tuesday, Friday
- Plate numbers ending in 9,0: Wednesday, Friday
With that being said, the number coding scheme in Metro Manila from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. is still followed. The MMDA has yet to announce when the proposed new number coding will be implemented.
As for the city of Makati, the MMDA noted that the number coding scheme still runs from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. However, Makati City is allowing exceptions including senior citizens with a Blue Card, persons with disability (PWD) with valid a PWD ID, and holidays.
Speaking of holidays, the government agency also announced that the number coding scheme will be lifted on May 3, 2022, in observance of Eid’l Fitr.
The current number coding scheme still stands
Currently, the two-day number coding scheme is up for approval from the 17 mayors in the National Capital Region (NCR). Last April, MMDA Chairman Romando Artes said that the approval will be released after Holy Week, and could be implemented starting May 1.
But since that’s not the case, the agency could start introducing it on May 16, 2022. Of note, the date of implementation could still change as the MMDA has yet to announce the exact date as to when the new number coding will be implemented.
