The most significant change that the Land Transportation Office (LTO) made for the driver’s license in recent times is extending the validity by up to 10 years. But it looks like the extension isn’t the only change the government agency had in mind, as the LTO driver’s license now has a new design moving forward.
A new driver's license design has been introduced
In a Facebook post by the Department of Transportation (DOTr), the agency revealed to the public the new design of the driver’s license. It drops the bluish theme of the front part and replaces it with a pearl white motif. Meanwhile, the back part remains identical including the placement of the serial number.
The government agency assured motorists that the security features of the old driver’s license will still be available in the new version, reducing the chances of counterfeiting. This is seen as an important step in weeding out incompetent drivers on the road, hopefully resulting in fewer accidents.
As mentioned, the LTO has now extended the validity of its driver’s license to 10 years. This can be availed of only by motorists who have spotless records on the agency’s database. Drivers who have otherwise committed violations will only be granted a 5-year driver’s license validity at most.
The agency has not announced when the new design will be implemented
For those who will renew their driver’s license, the agency is requiring them to take the Comprehensive Driver’s Education (CDE) to refresh their knowledge about the country’s road rules and regulations. It consists of 25 questions with a passing rate of 50 percent (13 correct answers).
Motorists can renew their driver’s licenses through the LTO’s online portal which can be convenient and safer, as applicants don’t have to attend face-to-face CDE seminars, reducing the chance of COVID-19 transmission. To note, the DOTr has not yet announced when the new design of the LTO driver’s license will be available.
