Makati to resume regular number coding scheme by March 16

As the National Capital Region (NCR) has been placed under Alert Level 1, the city of Makati will resume its regular number coding scheme starting March 16, 2022.

This means that the city’s number coding scheme will still be active from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m, but without exemptions this time around. The exemptions from the previous implementations were imposed in response to the pandemic, alleviating the crisis in the transport sector. 

Makati City clarified that senior citizens with a Blu Card will continually be exempted from the regular number coding scheme. This includes both driving and passenger Blu Card holders. Makati City also said that persons with disability (PWD) with valid PWD ID are also exempted from the regular number coding scheme. Moreover, as stated in the Makati Traffic Code, the exemption covers official functions and medical emergencies.

Until March 15, motorists traversing the city can still benefit from the exemptions currently being implemented by the governing body of Makati. It includes the exemption on vehicles with two or more people from being apprehended as a way to encourage carpooling amid the global health crisis.

Of note, Makati City will be implementing its regular number coding from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. starting March 16, 2022. As always, the said policy will automatically be lifted during holidays.

Meanwhile, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) is looking to expand its number coding scheme in the NCR. Currently, the Unified Vehicular Volume Reduction Program (UVVRP) is effective from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. In previous reports, the government agency stated that it is planning to modify the said policy to include a 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. ban on private vehicles.

Traffic czar Edison Bong Nebrija added that the MMDA is also eyeing a whole day implementation of the number coding scheme as NCR shifts to Alert Level 1. Nebrija added that the MMDA will observe traffic patterns and look into vehicular volume before giving its recommendation to the Metro Manila Council.
