This follows a hit-and-run incident along EDSA.

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) has reminded motorists and riders to stay out of the EDSA Bus Lane following a hit-and-run incident at the Shaw Boulevard tunnel southbound.

MMDA wants motorists to stay out of the EDSA bus lane

In MMDA’s report, a motorcycle rider was seen in CCTV footage possibly hit by a white SUV (sports utility vehicle) and was run over by a tanker driving beside the two-wheeler. To help with the investigation, the government agency will forward the footage and other evidence to the Philippine National Police (PNP).

The agency encourages the drivers of the white SUV and tanker to cooperate with the PNP to help with the investigation.

“It is with profound sadness that this incident happened. We express our deepest condolences to the family of the rider. We pray for their comfort in this difficult time,” said MMDA Acting Chairman Atty. Don Artes.

“We keep on reminding not to use the innermost lane of EDSA as it may result in an accident, but despite our repeated calls and pleas, many drivers of privately-owned vehicles and motorcycle riders disregard the policy,” added Artes.

The MMDA also reported the increasing number of vehicular accidents since the suspension of the NCAP (non-contact apprehension policy). In May 2023, the agency recorded 32,739 traffic violations. These factors are said to cause road accidents, as well as slow down vehicular traffic.

The bus lane is exclusive to select vehicle types only

But at least EDSA is seeing faster average speeds as compared to pre-pandemic levels despite the increased number of vehicles. The average speed for motorists going northbound is 24.98 km/h (from 21.67 km/h), while southbound motorists are running 22.46 km/h (from 11.02 km/h) on average.

Involved parties are encouraged to participate in the investigation

To prevent such incidents from happening, the MMDA reiterated that the EDSA Bus Carousel is exclusive for passenger buses, ambulances, and marked government vehicles responding to emergencies only. The agency vows to continue coming up with efforts to make roads safer under its Comprehensive Traffic Management Plan for Metro Manila.
