The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) continues to roll out efforts to make roads safer. One of the initiatives is to keep track of the times when road accidents frequently occur in the National Capital Region (NCR).
Most accidents happen when there is daylight
Based on the Metro Manila Accident Report Analysis System (MMARAS) from 2017 to 2020, road accidents in the NCR frequently occur from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon, 1:00 p.m., 4:00 p.m., and 7:00 p.m.
The highest number of road crashes was recorded in 2019, with the 11:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. time marks averaging around 7,000 accidents. A year later, the number significantly reduced mainly due to the restriction of the pandemic guidelines.
2018 saw the second-highest road accident average in the report, which is just trailed by the average number in 2017.
Despite vehicles running more openly at around 2:00 a.m. due to lighter traffic, the numbers were at their lowest. This can be explained by the fact that there were fewer chances of road accidents due to fewer cars on the road. The only downside is that crashes tend to be deadlier during these times.
The MMARAS from 2017 to 2020
Once 4:00 a.m. hit, the line graph started to climb to its peak fast to the 11:00 a.m. mark.
The MMDA can use this report to bolster its efforts in making roads safer under its Comprehensive Traffic Management Plan for Metro Manila. Moreover, the government agency reminded motorists to ensure that they are in good condition to drive before heading out. It can not only keep them safe but other road users as well.
Another way to help minimize accidents is by checking BLOWBAGETS (battery, lights, oil, water, brake, air, gas, engine, tire, and self). This can reduce the chances of road incidents such as tire blowouts, faulty brakes, and engine overheating.
