Will it be the new GLA crossover SUV?

The COVID-19 virus couldn’t stop Mercedes-Benz Philippines from launching a new model yet again. The virtual launch is set to happen on September 28, and Mercedes-Benz PH said that we should get ready for its “bolder, sportier, and sexier” SUV.

To backtrack a bit, Mercedes-Benz PH introduced the GLB last August 2020. It’s a seven-seater SUV that’s powered by a 1.3-liter engine that delivers 163 hp and 250 Nm of torque. Power is sent to the front wheels through a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. As such, what could Mercedes-Benz PH be launching on September 28? Based on the teaser invite and video, it could be the new 2021 Mercedes GLA, a five-seater subcompact crossover SUV.

We think that the Mercedes GLA is the most possible model to be launched by Mercedes-Benz PH since this vehicle will complement and further diversify the local SUV lineup of the brand. Moreover, the teaser video that was used by the company gave us a hint that the GLA could indeed be the “bolder, sportier, and sexier” vehicle that it would launch. Why so? Well, watch the videos posted below, and do some comparison.

Mercedes-Benz GLA (2020): The Design

The new Mercedes-Benz GLA debuted last year before the end of 2019. The GLA was introduced as an entry-level into the brand’s family of SUV models. With that, the GLA is a vehicle that caters to the younger demographic who are on the lookout for a premium subcompact crossover SUV. Initially, the GLA is offered with a 1.3-liter turbocharged engine that’s similar to the GLB’s power unit. The GLA is a sleek and stylish crossover

During the second quarter of 2020, the German automaker started to offer additional engine options for the GLA. It can now be equipped with a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine that delivers 221 hp and 350 Nm of torque. The engine is connected to an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission and is available in front-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive configuration. The GLA can also be powered by a diesel engine that can generate either 148 hp or 187 hp.

The dashboard of the Mercedes-Benz GLA is fitted with a massive screen

Inside, the GLA comes with a premium cabin. The interior of this five-seater subcompact crossover will definitely make you feel that you’re onboard a Mercedes-Benz. It comes with a massive screen that’s integrated with Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX) tech, which controls various vehicle settings such as driving modes, seat positions, in-car entertainment, navigation, among others.

Could Mercedes-Benz PH be launching the new GLA this month?

The German brand also said that the GLA has the capability to autonomously brake to avoid a collision or to reduce the impact. Mercedes-Benz claims that the GLA can automatically brake at a speed of about 60 km/h when it detects a stationary vehicle or pedestrians ahead.

So, could Mercedes-Benz PH be launching the new GLA this month? We certainly think so but take this news with a grain of salt.
