Combining luxury with tech in taking driving to the next level.

Mercedes-Benz and Google announced that they will be working together to create next-generation navigation technology, with the aim of a branded navigation experience powered by the Google Maps platform.

Mercedes-Benz joins forces with Google in the hopes of creating its own branded navigation experience

“We invite only the very best partners to enhance our operating system and to add to the Mercedes-Benz customer experience,” said Mercedes-Benz Chief Executive Officer Ola Källenius. “Google has been a leader in maps and navigation for many years. With our strategic partnership, we are excited to create unique services and to elevate the level of confidence for our customers.”

Both companies bared their alliance to create the industry’s next-generation digital luxury car experience. Mercedes-Benz will have access to Google’s geospatial services such as real-time and predictive traffic information, automatic rerouting, and detailed information about places.

These will be embedded into the upcoming Mercedes-Benz Operating System (MB.OS) to enhance the navigation experience for users, taking advantage of the high-resolution screen’s user interface and graphical display.

The latest models equipped with MB.OS can take advantage of Google's computing power

Google Maps data will also serve as the basis for assisted driving features such as automatic speed adjustments when approaching intersections or curves. In addition, the Mercedes-Benz infotainment system will also include the YouTube app for streaming multimedia content.

Both Mercedes-Benz and Google have committed to exploring more areas of collaboration using artificial intelligence (AI), data, and open infrastructure solutions. For instance, the speed and efficiency of Google Cloud’s data processing platform can be used to analyze Mercedes-Benz fleet data.

Autonomous driving is another area of cooperation that both companies will explore

“Our partnership with Mercedes-Benz brings advanced technologies from Google Maps Platform, Cloud, and YouTube to help create new experiences for drivers,” said Google and Alphabet Chief Executive Officer Sundar Pichai. He adds that beyond designing a customized navigation interface, the automaker can also use the tech giant’s capabilities toward autonomous driving and promote sustainability.

As a first step, Mercedes-Benz customers will be given access to Place Details provided by Google, available on all vehicles equipped with the latest version of the Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX). The service provides detailed information on over 200 million businesses and places worldwide, including ratings and reviews.
