Not long after the premiere of its MC20 sports car, Maserati is previewing the convertible version. The first completed prototype has rolled off the Italian luxury automaker’s Modena facilities to embark on real-world road tests.
The interesting cloud camouflage echoes the open-air feeling of a convertible
The car is wrapped in a rather unique camouflage design, featuring intermingling clouds set against a light blue backdrop, in contrast to the usual spheres and squiggles designed to disorient the observer (and the paparazzi).
Maserati says the choice was deliberate, as it references the way the sky becomes accessible when the top drops. It adds that the variant will sport the same monocoque body made of carbon fiber and composite materials, just like its standard hardtop sibling.
Judging by the silhouette, the car’s production version could sport a folding hardtop instead of fabric, similar to the Ferrari F8 Spider. However, a slight weight penalty is in store, taking into account the additional mechanism needed for the sliding roof. No shots of the interior were shown, but it is expected to be identical to the coupe, including the carbon fiber trim, leather bucket seats, and 10-inch digital instrument cluster.
Road tests are now commencing for this early prototype
Equally anticipated is the mid-mounted 3.0-liter twin-turbo Nettuno V6 that kicks up 621 horsepower and 730 Nm of torque, with power delivered to the rear wheels via an 8-speed Getrag dual-clutch gearbox. Maserati says that its partnership with fellow Italian carmaker Alfa Romeo means the engine packs serious Formula One technology, adding that an electric powertrain is being developed as well, in line with the current pace of electrification across the automotive industry.
Seeing how many of the MC20 convertible’s physical details are apparent despite the cover, it’s safe to presume that the car doesn’t need too many visual tweaks for its debut, which Maserati has not disclosed when. The last convertible that emerged from Maserati’s workshops was the GranCabrio which bowed out in 2020.
The 3.0-liter Nettuno twin-turbo V6 is expected behind the rear seats
Meanwhile, the standard MC20 coupe is doing well despite the steep $210,000 (over Php 10.5 million) price tag, having sold out for the 2022 model year.
