The new feature enhances the SUV’s off-road capabilities.

The fourth-generation Sorento midsize crossover from Kia is widely anticipated to be bigger while delivering efficient performance and a host of sophisticated technologies. Its off-road capabilities are also expected to receive a considerable boost, by way of a newly-developed ‘Terrain Mode’.

Controlled using the Mode Select dial on the center console, the feature enables drivers to switch between dedicated Mud, Snow, and Sand settings. When engaged, the system optimizes the drivetrain for driving on each type of terrain, simultaneously adjusting the output and distribution of engine torque while managing stability control.

Snow mode is engineered for driving in cold climates, optimizing the vehicle’s forward momentum by limiting torque output and distributing it between all four wheels.

The fourth-generation Kia Sorento is built to be more adventurous than before

Traction control applies a minimum amount of braking force. Mud mode is designed for muddy trails and fields, with a stronger braking force accompanying the smooth application of engine torque. Sand mode keeps the Kia Sorento from getting stuck on beaches and desert dunes with increased levels of torque going to the wheels.

Terrain Mode also regulates shift timings on the eight-speed dual-clutch (diesel variants) and six-speed automatic (hybrid variants) transmissions to adapt to different surfaces. The system will make the all-wheel-drive versions of the Sorento more adept at taking on less-than-ideal road surfaces, with improved traction, stability, and control.

“The Kia Sorento has always been a highly capable vehicle, and the new model demonstrates how Kia has evolved the car for the modern era,” says Pablo Martinez Masip, Director of Product Planning and Pricing for Kia Motors Europe.

“The Sorento is now more capable than ever and is designed to provide drivers with greater confidence and control at the wheel. The new model combines intelligent all-wheel drive and a strong monocoque chassis with new Terrain Mode functionality.”

The new Kia Sorento will be available for sale by the third quarter of 2020.
