Hyundai Motor Group has partnered with LG to enable its webOS on the automaker’s car models. More specifically, the new technology will be made available on models from the company’s luxury brand, Genesis.
LG's webOS will make its way into Genesis cars
The webOS for Automotive allows passengers to watch high-definition content on in-car screens complemented by the immersive sound quality Genesis has engineered. Marking LG’s first unveiling of its automotive content platform, the webOS is also used in the company’s Smart TVs, which have reached cumulative sales of 200 million.
Perhaps the most significant feature of the new technology is the integration of YouTube’s native TV app. It is said to provide an optimized in-vehicle viewing experience. The YouTube feature is also available in other brands such as Volvo made possible by search engine giant Google instead. Moreover, LG’s webOS for Automotive also enables other streaming apps on the go such as Netflix.
Hyundai, LG, and YouTube collaborated to make this possible
The goal is to enhance driving and chauffeur experiences by leveraging on technologies and insights accumulated over decades in TVs and home appliance spaces. All the said features should be made available in Genesis models such as the G70, GV80, and G90.
“Thanks to technological development based on SDV, people can comfortably enjoy various video content in their vehicles,” said Hyundai Motor Group Vice President of the Infotainment Development Center Kwon Hae-young. “We will continue to expand our collaboration with major global content companies to provide more diverse and valuable in-vehicle experiences to our customers.”
“LG remains committed to introducing the most advanced vehicle solutions, including webOS for Automotive, as we strive to elevate the customer experience for drivers and passengers while also accommodating the diverse demands of car manufacturers,” said LG Vehicle Component Solutions Company President Eun Seokhyun.
Genesis has not made its way into the Philippines. However, other brands under the Hyundai Motor Group including Hyundai and Kia are available locally. One of the Genesis models, the all-electric GV60, comes with the same electric vehicle (EV) platform as the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6.
