Faces come in all shapes and sizes, which the current information era capitalizes on. Modern smartphones already use facial recognition technology, while digital payment platforms require a picture of the account holder’s visage for more secure transactions.
Genesis announced the rollout of its facial recognition technology
The innovation has reached the automotive industry as well. South Korean luxury car brand Genesis, for instance, revealed that it will be implementing its own facial recognition feature called ‘Face Connect’ technology. While the automaker already includes smart keys as standard, the system will enable its vehicles to recognize human faces for ingress and egress, among other functions.
Face Connect uses a Near Infra-Red (NIR) camera that can scan and verify facial data under a variety of environments, including low-light conditions such as dark and cloudy weather as well as nighttime. This technology will prove useful in addressing a perennial problem for car owners: forgetting the keys at an inopportune time. If the driver inadvertently leaves the keys inside the car, for instance, the vehicle can still be locked using Face Connect.
Stored facial data is accompanied by individual user preferences with regard to vehicle operation
Similar to tech used on the Subaru Outback, Face Connect can store individual driver presets such as seat position, steering wheel adjustment, side mirror angle, and infotainment settings. Up to two faces can be saved for each vehicle, and additional profiles can be registered through the onboard voice assistant. Facial information is encrypted and stored securely, with drivers able to delete them to make way for new profiles.
Paired with a Fingerprint Authentication System that lets drivers start the car just by using fingerprint recognition, Face Connect gives owners complete control of the vehicle using biometric information. This replaces PIN code access when making in-vehicle payments and activating or disengaging Valet Mode.
The tech will debut on the upcoming Genesis GV60 crossover
In addition, Genesis has expanded the scope of its over-the-air (OTA) software updates, previously limited to instrument readouts and infotainment features. More vehicle functions can now benefit from OTA updates, such as control systems, suspension, brakes, steering, and airbags.
Genesis plans to launch these new technologies on the upcoming GV60, its first luxury crossover in electric guise. The suite will eventually cascade down to other models in the carmaker’s lineup.
