The two EVs come with identical powertrain components.

Two of the many cars we’re expecting to see on Philippine roads next year are the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6. The two crossovers will not only be additions to the brands’ respective lineups but also elevate the growing electric vehicle (EV) market in the country.

While waiting for the official Philippine debuts, let’s see how the Ioniq 5 and EV6 square up against each other in a quarter-mile (0.40 km) drag race. This is brought by a YouTube channel called Technically Jeff where he put his own EV6 to the test.

For specifics, the Ioniq 5 and EV6 are underpinned by the same Electric Global Modular Platform (E-GMP) platform developed by parent company Hyundai Motor Group. Moreover, the two share identical performance components including a powertrain that makes 320 horsepower and 605 Nm of torque.

Power is sent to all four wheels thanks to the all-wheel-drive layout fitted into the Korean crossover twins. The Ioniq 5 in the SE trim is lighter than the EV6, which also has a trailer hitch that adds weight. But thanks to the installation of lightweight forged Titan 7 wheels, the EV6 has a fighting chance.

The Kia EV6 AWD managed to finish ahead of the Hyundai Ioniq 5 by almost a car length. YouTuber Jeff acknowledged the lighter wheel setup as one of the factors why the EV6 got the bragging rights. But just as the powertrain components are similar to each other, the results in a drag race appear to be too.

Kia EV6

In our previous report, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 is expected to arrive in January next year. Meanwhile, the Kia EV6 will go on sale for the Philippines market in early 2023. By then, maybe we can try to give the two another go at it on track to see who the king of electric drag race is.
