This will be Honda’s last purely combustion model, at least in Europe.

Beginning with the sixth generation, a Honda Civic release has never been complete without an accompanying Type R variant. The current iteration of the nameplate is no exception, and Honda has confirmed that the next-generation high-performance model will arrive for the 2022 model year.

The sixth-generation model to wear the badge will debut by next year

In the global press release of the Honda Civic Hatchback, the new Civic Type R will be making an entrance together with the Civic Hybrid. Consistent with previous versions, the 2022 Type R’s aesthetics will largely resemble the standard Civic Hatchback’s design, with the expected visual and aero tweaks to set it apart. It will be interesting to see how Honda will make this work, considering that the 11th generation Civic has a more mature look compared to the outgoing model.

It will likely carry the Civic Hatchback's aesthetic, with sporty touches of its own

Another anticipated feature is the stick shift, a Type R hallmark, likely retaining the six forward gears that’s in play on the current fifth generation. This will channel power from the 2.0-liter turbocharged gasoline engine (an amalgam of the standard Civic’s naturally aspirated 2.0-liter and scrolled 1.5-liter inline-4 options) down to the front wheels.

The drivetrain brings some disappointing news to those expecting a significant power bump, as Honda has officially quashed hopes of having all-wheel-drive on the Type R, similar to that used on the Acura NSX. This lays to rest previous rumors claiming that the upcoming model will take advantage of hybrid power (via dual electric motors) to spin both axles, to the tune of 400 hp. With the Type R remaining true to its purist ethos, fans can heave a sigh of relief for now.

There are also reports that the new Type R will be the last Honda model solely powered by internal combustion, at least for the European market. This will pave the way for the rise of hybrid and electrics in the carmaker’s future lineup, in line with global efforts towards electric mobility by 2050.
