It dethroned some of Ferrari’s iconic supercars.

Honda said that the 2021 Civic Type R limited edition is an embodiment of track-ready performance, and proved it by setting a new record at the Suzuka race circuit in Japan – beating the Ferrari F40, Renault Megane, and Porsche Carrera GT.

The Civic Type R limited edition finished with a 2:25.4 lap time in the Suzuka race circuit’s 5.8-kilometer course. One concern in the new record is that Honda didn’t break the record with an actual production vehicle.

In response, Honda said that the vehicle used in the record had the same technical specification as the production version, with no modification or performance enhancements.

With the new record, the Honda Civic Type R limited edition is now crowned as the fastest FWD ever at the Suzuka race circuit. Under the hood, the Type R limited edition still uses the same 2.0-liter turbo-4 capable of generating 306 hp and 400 Nm of torque.

What helped the Civic Type R limited edition achieve this feat is Honda’s ambition of further reducing its weight.

The Civic Type R limited edition is lighter than the regular Civic Type R because of its BBS forged aluminum wheels that reduced up to 8.1 kg.

Honda also removed the rear heater ducts, which reduced 12.7 kg. Of note, the Euro-spec Civic Type R limited edition is even lighter as Honda removed the air conditioning system and infotainment system, reducing a total of 47 kg.

As much as we are longing to see the Civic Type R limited edition locally, it seems that we need to settle for the regular Honda Civic Type R for now. But who knows? There can be miracles, right?
