By 2030, several markets will start phasing out internal combustion engine (ICE) cars mainly to eliminate or reduce carbon emissions, ultimately resulting in greener mobility. Japanese car brand Subaru, in partnership with Toyota, has an early entry to a future of zero-emission lineup with the introduction of the Solterra EV.
All-new 2022 Subaru Solterra EV
The Subaru Solterra EV is derived from the Latin words for “Sun” and “Earth” which sound like a proper name for an all-electric vehicle. It is built on the brand’s all-new electric vehicle architecture called the e-Subaru Global Platform.
Looking at the teaser photo of Subaru’s new SUV electric vehicle (EV), it shows similarities with Toyota’s new bZ4X which is the brand’s new entry to its newly established series of battery electric vehicles (BEVs). The Toyota bZ4X is also developed by other car brands such as BYD, Daihatsu, and Subaru.
Toyota bZ4X Concept
With that being said, the Subaru Solterra EV should be the equivalent version of the Toyota bZ4X with subtle design variations. As of this writing, the design of the Solterra has not been fully revealed. The only feature we can see from the Subaru SUV EV is that it will have the same cube-like headlamps as the bZ4X with a slightly different daytime running light (DRL) design.
No technical specifications have been revealed by Subaru for its new Solterra as well. However, one can expect that it will be designed with the brand’s symmetrical all-wheel drive (AWD) and be built with its state-of-the-art safety technology called the EyeSight Driver Assist Technology.
Subaru Solterra EV
Subaru said that the Solterra will go on sale in 2022, the same year as the Toyota bZ4X’s targeted production year. Both Subaru and Toyota will start innovating the automotive market with their latest EV models which should be interesting considering that the Solterra will be Subaru’s first-ever EV.
