Cars we want to buy: Mitsubishi Montero Sport

Updated Nov 24, 2022

It gives you everyday versatility.

Hello there. Previously, Jacob shared his opinion on why he prefers to buy the Suzuki Jimny. By the way, he is Philkotse.com’s Content Manager.

Now, it’s my turn to share which car I want to buy. But before we head on to that, let me introduce myself first. I’m Martin, the Content Editor of Philkotse.com. I’ve been with the team for almost a year now but I have been around in the motoring beat since 2014.

So, which car do I want to buy? Well, I have a lot of cars in mind, to be honest. But since I am not born with a silver spoon, I would settle with a single car that will most likely fit my daily needs.

My personal choice is the Mitsubishi Montero Sport.

Everyday versatility

The Mitsubishi Montero Sport is probably one of the popular vehicles in the local market. It’s one of the mainstream midsize SUVs you see on the road. I pick the Montero Sport because of the everyday versatility it offers. The exterior design is the clincher as to why I choose this vehicle over its segment rivals.

Still enough room for cargo even when the third-row seats are up

The first thing on my checklist is that I need a vehicle that has ample cargo space. The thing is, my brother and I started a small business when the coronavirus pandemic struck the country last year. As such, I need a car that can accommodate and transport bulk goods.

Aside from the cargo space, I need a vehicle that could deliver reasonable fuel consumption. Luckily, I was able to test drive the Montero Sport 4x4 GT that’s powered by a 2.4-liter diesel engine. It delivers 179 hp and 430 Nm of torque, mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission. During my test drive, I was able to get 15 km/l while driving at an average speed of 80 km/h. On the other hand, city driving yielded 7 km/l while driving an average speed of 30 km/h. Considering the Montero Sport’s overall size, I can live with those fuel consumption ratings.

Mitsubishi Montero Sport comes with distinctive taillights

The Montero Sport also has notable power delivery and good throttle response, driving characteristics that can help give a more efficient drive. Not just that, the Montero Sport has a stable ride when driven on the open highway. It feels well-planted on the road as you drive at highway speeds. Of note, the Montero Sport’s steering wheel leans a bit more on the heavy side. But that can be to your advantage since it can give you better control of the vehicle when you’re cruising on the highway. Again, the points mentioned are important factors for me since I pick up supplies for our family business down South.

The seven-seater capacity of the Montero Sport also offers versatility. More seats, more fun. That’s just how the Filipino culture is. Moreover, before the pandemic, my family and I usually go out on weekends. More often than not, my grandparents tag along on our weekend adventures.  So, having a seven-seater midsize SUV solves that problem.

Lastly, one of the reasons that made me decide to choose the Montero Sport is the attachment I have with our 2003 Pajero Field Master. My dad still uses that vehicle almost as his daily, and so far, the Pajero is not acting up and giving us maintenance headaches. With that, I hope the Montero Sport can be that reliable as well.

Overall, the Montero Sport is a vehicle that I’m willing to spend my money on since it gives me everyday versatility, and it fits my daily needs. The Montero Sport price Philippines is also reasonable. So, that’s it for me.
