The Land Cruiser gets its much-needed makeover.

Toyota has officially launched the 2022 Land Cruiser in celebration of the full-size luxury SUV’s 70-year run in the automotive industry. In 1951, the Land Cruiser first came out and has earned the reputation of a strong and rugged SUV as it tackled any type of road seamlessly.

After 14 years of no significant updates, Toyota wants to preserve the traditional elements of the full-size luxury SUV on the new version while adding innovative and more modern features inside and out. The Japanese car brand also teased the new GR Sport which should address the need for a more aggressive Land Cruiser.

Exterior

The new Toyota Land Cruiser still retains the boxy-type body design while adding exterior features that make the SUV look contemporary including the new LED headlights accented by the L-shaped daytime running lights (DRLs). Also new to the front fascia is the larger grille that helps emphasize the SUV’s massive size.

Going to the rear, the taillights are revamped to look sleeker that complement the new headlight design. The tailgate has been restyled which now looks boxier than ever. Meanwhile, the chrome bar that connects the taillights from the previous model was discontinued. The vehicle now comes with chrome trims on the lower rear bumper.

But perhaps the most significant update on the 2022 model is its new GA-F platform, based on the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA). The new platform is lighter by as much as 200 kg than the outgoing model. It also more rigid, and more stable as the center gravity is moved closer to the ground which further improves the SUV’s premium characteristics. The new GA-F platform is said to give the 2022 Land Cruiser a better ride comfort for drivers and passengers while keeping the SUV’s renowned off-road characteristics.

Interior

The new interior gets massive improvements highlighted by the new infotainment screen attached to the cleaner-looking dashboard layout.

Significant updates have been made in the cabin

To improve the convenience of the driver, Toyota installed ergonomic and multi-adjustable seats, large windows for better visibility, and strategically positioned buttons to help drivers focus on the road better. Meanwhile, the rear passengers get to benefit from the 4-zone climate control, seat ventilation, and two USB ports for charging.

Tech & Safety

Bringing the entertainment to passengers is either a 9-inch or a 12.3-inch infotainment screen that supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The SUV is also integrated with a heads-up display, electric steering column, air ionizer, active suppression and optimization of engine sound, wireless charging for smartphones, panoramic camera, and more.

The new Land Cruiser gets tech updates

As for safety, the latest generation of the Toyota Safety Sense is equipped on the 2022 Land Cruiser. Some of the safety features include the adaptive high beam system (AHS) to automatically adjust the best settings for the headlights and the automatic braking function to reduce the risk of colliding with vehicles or people.

Engine & Performance

The V8 engine from the previous models has now been discontinued and is now replaced with V6 engines instead. Under the hood, the 2022 Toyota Land Cruiser can be powered by either a 3.5-liter V6 gasoline engine that makes 409 hp and 649 Nm of torque or a 3.3-liter V6 twin-turbo diesel engine that can generate 304 hp and 700 Nm of torque.

Showing how premium full-size SUVs should be

Power is sent to all wheels with the SUV’s four-wheel-drive system via its 10-speed automatic transmission. Further improving the performance capabilities of the Land Cruiser is the Multi-Terrain Select system which can be switched by the driver to the best mode depending on the road condition.

With the introduction of the new 2022 300 Series Land Cruiser, the previous and heavier 200 Series powered by a V8 is now officially discontinued. No official pricing has been rolled out by Toyota yet, but one can expect it to go on sale globally in the fourth quarter this year. Meanwhile, the new GR Sport should be given a proper introduction by the Japanese car brand sometime soon.
