Who wants to go on a road trip with the VW Kombi?

Volkswagen Philippines is ramping up the local lineup as it announced the arrival of Multivan Kombi, or also known as the Type 2. The Volkswagen Kombi, alongside the Beetle (Type 1), helped put the German car brand on the map since its introduction in the second half of the 20th century.

However, this is not the first time the renowned van will compete in the country. In the late 1950s, the Type 2 has started roaming around Philippine roads with its unmistakable design. And in 1970, its local sales peaked at 6,100 units, enough for Volkswagen to secure the top spot in the Philippine automotive sales ranking.

Based on the announcement rolled out by Volkswagen Philippines, the local lineup will get the sixth-generation model (T6) instead of the new and modern-looking seventh-gen model (T7). Regardless, the arrival of the Type 2 should further grow the car brand’s local lineup to cater to those in the market for a spacious and dependable van.

The ultimate road trip vehicle

No official specifications have been disclosed for the upcoming PH-spec Volkswagen Multivan Kombi yet including pricing. Now, considering that the Type 2 is assembled in Europe, one can expect that its market value should be relatively higher as compared to how the rest of the models in the Philippine lineup are priced.

All the current Volkswagen models in the country are imported from China which makes these vehicles benefit from the ASEAN-China Free Trade Agreement, resulting in more affordable pricing. The importation from Europe could be a good thing or a bad thing. But this could also pave the way for more models from Europe to arrive in the country such as the Volkswagen Golf.

Volkswagen Philippines' lineup is growing

More details are expected to be released before the Volkswagen Multivan Kombi’s local debut set in the third quarter of 2021. The Type 2 will be the second new model added to the local lineup this year following the introduction of the Volkswagen T-Cross last May 2021.
