The fifth-generation Toyota Prius has been nominated as one of the five finalists for Japan’s 2023 Good Design Grand Award. This means the compact hatchback managed to top the 1,548 awardees – which were selected out of a total of 5,447 screened items.
Toyota Prius
According to the Good Design Award, the latest iteration of the Prius comes with a design that dispels the notion that electrified vehicles look boring. The firm added that the model expresses “a first impact that makes you fall in love at first sight and universal beauty.”
The front end of the Prius is underscored by the sharp C-shaped daytime running lights (DRLs). Below it is a trapezoidal lower grille finished with silver and black trim pieces. Turning to the side, the liftback almost looks like a sedan with a Coda Tronca-like rear end along with a smooth roof line.
The Prius is recognized for its design
Speaking of the rear, Toyota fitted a trendy full-width taillight with a black surround for a more stylish finish. The ends of the surround sharply slope downwards, giving a mask-like look. It does not have a visible exhaust pipe but it sports a lower bumper predominantly in black.
The Toyota Prius joins the other four finalists for the 2023 Good Design Grand Award. These include the “Panasonic LAMDASH PALM IN ES-PV61” electric shaver, a day service center for aged persons from Yamazaki Kentaro Design Workshop Co., Ltd., the “NHK Citizen Lab”, and the “Kamiyama Marugoto College of Design, Engineering, and Entrepreneurship.”
2023 Good Design Exhibition
Fellow Japanese automaker Mitsubishi is one of the 1,548 awardees but only falls short of the top five list. Mitsubishi was recognized for the design of the all-new Triton, Xforce, and Delica Mini. The Triton and Xforce will be launched in the Philippines, with the next-gen pickup truck slated to arrive in January 2024.
The winner will be announced at the 2023 Good Design Exhibition happening from October 25 to October 29 in Tokyo, Japan.
