Toyota revealed the Kijang Innova EV concept at the 2022 Indonesia International Auto Show, signifying the automaker’s ambitions for electrification.

In the Indonesian market, Toyota said that it plans to introduce 10 electric vehicles (EVs) over the next five years. Although nothing is official just yet regarding the future of the new Innova EV concept, one can expect that the electrified family MPV will spearhead the automaker’s massive EV expansion in the said region.
The EV concept is based on the current second-generation Toyota Innova. This is an interesting feat as previous reports suggest that an all-new Innova is bound to be unveiled soon. No official specifications have been disclosed as of this writing aside from the revamped styling that is undoubtedly an EV.
A new EV look
From the closed-grille design alone, one can tell that it is an emission-free MPV. It is installed with blue illumination on the logo and strip lights to show that it has an eco-friendly powertrain, similar to the ones on the Toyota Corolla Cross and Camry. The sides are added with blue with black decals to create distinction from the non-EV model.
Moving to the interior, not a lot has been changed, at least as shown on Toyota Indonesia’s 2-minute reveal video. The only apparent updates are the information display that monitors the electrified powertrain and the blue illumination on the instrument gauge cluster. Also, the seats are embedded with the “Innova EV” badge.

One can say that an electrified version of a well-known vehicle such as the Toyota Innova is a good way to let car buyers recognize the benefits of EVs. Currently, Toyota is looking to expand its EV lineup in the ASEAN region with the bZ4X. While the fate of the Innova EV concept is still unclear, the company announced last year that it will introduce 15 new EVs.
