The images suggest that it will be a tough-looking SUV.

Despite having financial issues, SsangYong Motor remains steadfast as it continues to preview its upcoming all-new SUV.

SsangYong Torres SUV

The Korean automaker revealed that its all-new SUV, which has a project name J100, will bear the name Torres. The said model name sounds familiar in the Philippines as it is among the popular Filipino surnames. But before you go and share this news with the caption “Pinoy Pride”, know that the Torres moniker has nothing to do with the three stars and a sun.

SsangYong shared that the name ‘Torres’ was inspired by the spectacular views of Torres del Paine National Park in Patagonia. The Korean automaker added that the said park was designated a World Biosphere Reserve status by UNESCO in 1978, and it is known for its magnificent mountains, glaciers, lakes, and rivers.

The SsangYong Torres is the first model to embody the car brand’s new design philosophy dubbed “Powered by Toughness”. One can instantly notice that with the Torres’ front end, which is highlighted by an assertive grille as seen on the latest official images.

The image further shows that the Torres will come with a large bumper and prominent fender flares, which hints that SsangYong intends to make it an off-road-ready SUV. The rear, on the other hand, is integrated with distinctive taillights, a bold bumper, and a wraparound window.

“The SUV market continues to expand and subdivide, and with Torres we are filling the gap between semi-medium-sized SUVs such as Korando and large SUVs like Rexton. This move will create an additional segment in the market and will open up new opportunities for us,” SsangYong Motor said in a statement.

Previously, SsangYong said that the J100 is slated to be an electric SUV. The car brand added that it will share its powertrain with the Korando e-Motion, which could feature a 140kW electric motor powered by a 61.5kWh lithium-ion battery.

Last February, the Korean carmaker’s SUV was reportedly spotted undergoing field testing. The spy shots reveal a similar rear-end design to the latest image that SsangYong has released.

SsangYong added that an electric vehicle version of the Torres, with project name U100, will be introduced towards the end of 2023.

Do you think that the Torres SUV can make a significant impact on SsangYong’s sales?
