Ahead of its global premiere, the all-new 2023 Toyota Wigo has been put to the test at the New Car Assessment Programme for Southeast Asian Countries (ASEAN NCAP).
The Toyota Wigo scored a 4-star ASEAN NCAP safety rating
The model tested is the Perodua Axia SE, which is the hatchback’s variant one step below the top-spec AV. In case you’re wondering, the Toyota Wigo is the same as the Perodua Axia, with the latter sold in the Malaysian market. If the next-gen model were to arrive in the Philippines, it will come with Toyota badges and the Wigo model name.
After a series of crash tests, the Toyota Wigo (Perodua Axia) took home a four-star ASEAN NCAP safety rating. It is a similar result to the hatch’s first ASEAN NCAP in 2014 when it achieved a four-star rating.
The variant tested only uses two airbags, with the flagship Axia AV offering six. It comes standard with Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Pedestrian Protection Technology, and Seatbelt Reminder System (SBR) for both frontal and rear seat occupants.
As for optional safety features, the new Wigo (Axia) is available with safety assist technologies such as Lane Departure Warning (LDW), Forward Collision Warning (FCW), Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA), Blind Spot Detection (BSD), and Auto High Beam (AHB). However, a Lane Keep Assist function is not available.
The small hatch is available with advanced driver assist system functions as an option
The Toyota Wigo (Perodua Axia) scored 25.65 out of 32 points in the Adult Occupant Protection (AOP) category, 43.43 out of 51 points in the Child Occupant Protection category, 16.50 out of 21 points in the Safety Assist category, and seven out of 16 points in the Motorcyclist Safety (MS) category.
Overall, the hatchback finished with 73.55 points from the total weighted scores of 32.06 points in the AOP category, 17.03 points in the COP category, 15.71 points in the Safety Assist category, and 8.75 points in the MS category. The said overall score is good for a four-star ASEAN NCAP safety rating.
The next-gen Toyota Wigo (Perodua Axia) is slated to make its global premiere on February 14. While no official pricing has been released, we at least get an idea of the new hatchback’s capabilities in terms of safety.
