The agency attributes this to the exclusive motorcycle lane.

Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) acting chairman Atty. Romando “Don” Artes said that there were only 15 reported motorcycle-related accidents along Commonwealth Avenue last June 2023. This, according to the MMDA, shows a decrease in motorcycle-related accidents along the said thoroughfare.

The MMDA says the exclusive motorcycle lane along Commonwealth Avenue is effective

Artes believes that the lower number of accidents involving riders in Commonwealth Avene last month is attributed to the exclusive motorcycle lane. The MMDA chairman said that riders traversing the said thoroughfare are now more aware and have already become more accustomed to the exclusive lane, resulting in fewer motorcycle-related accidents.

The MMDA shared that it has recorded 544 motorcycle-related accidents from January to March 2023, which shows a monthly average of around 181 cases. This roughly shows that the motorcycle-related accidents last June 2023 can be considered significantly low compared to the monthly average from January to March 2023. Although, a more detailed comparison can be done if the MMDA released more comprehensive statistics.

The MMDA added that the motorcycle-related accidents along Commonwealth Avenue from January to June 2023 are 920 cases, which translates to a monthly average of around 153.

In comparison to last year’s data, the MMDA Traffic Engineering Center reported a total of 1,010 accidents involving motorcycles along Commonwealth Avenue from January to August 2022, showing a monthly average of about 126 cases.

The current 2023 data shared by the MMDA shows a higher monthly average but do take note that the current data released by the agency only covers January to June, which falls short by two months.

Exclusive motorcycle lane along Commonwealth Avenue

Now, if the months of July and August 2023 each recorded 15 motorcycle-related accidents respectively, the projected cases amount to 950 (January to August 2023). The projected January to August 2023 motorcycle-related accidents, 950 cases, translates to a monthly average of around 119 cases.

Comparing January to August 2022 to the projected numbers in the same period this 2023 could show a monthly projected decrease of 5.6% in regard to motorcycle-related accidents along Commonwealth Avenue.

But, projected numbers can only do so much. A detailed breakdown of motorcycle-related accidents along Commonwealth Avenue is the more sensible approach to determine if the exclusive motorcycle lane is indeed effective.
