The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) has released a set of guidelines for the exclusive motorcycle lane on Commonwealth Avenue in Quezon City. This is in connection with the full implementation of the new traffic scheme on the said road.

The exclusive motorcycle lane was implmented for the sake of safety

These guidelines from the MMDA outline the proper procedures that motorists should follow with respect to the exclusive motorcycle lane policy. For the benefit of our readers, here are the guidelines:

Lane Assignments

On Commonwealth Avenue from Elliptical Road until Doña Carmen, the first lane from the sidewalk is exclusive to bicycles. The second lane from the sidewalk is for public utility vehicles and the third lane is for motorcycles. Meanwhile, the remaining lanes are for other types of vehicles including private vehicles.

Entering side streets or intersections

Motorists who need to enter or exit from a side street or intersection should only do so on the indicated transition lines or pavement markings positioned 100 meters from the solid line of their lanes. Note that the said distance of the transition lines is not the same for all roads as it will depend on the width of a particular road.

Going to and from establishments

Motorists who will leave or enter establishments along Commonwealth Ave. are required to exit or enter the dedicated lanes from a distance of 200 meters.

Hopefully the MMDA and QC traffic management can consistently enforce these rules

Using U-turn slots

Motorists who plan on using the U-turn slots along Commonwealth Ave. are allowed to leave their dedicated lanes at 200 meters from the target U-turn slot. As a side note, the MMDA mentioned that motorcycles are not permitted on zipper lanes for safety purposes.

Fines

Included in the MMDA guidelines are the fines if found in violation of the exclusive motorcycle lane policy on Commonwealth Avenue.

For erring public utility vehicle drivers, they will be fined Php 1,200. Motorcycle riders and other vehicle drivers (including private vehicles) will then be fined Php 500 if found violating the exclusive motorcycle lane policy.

Are the guidelines for the exclusive motorcycle lane from MMDA easy to follow? Can the MMDA enforce these consistently as time goes on?
