The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) announces the extended dry run for the exclusive motorcycle (MC) lane along Commonwealth Avenue.
The MMDA extended the Commonwealth Avenue MC lane dry run for a week
According to MMDA Acting Chairman Atty. Don Artes, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) will continue working on repairing the uneven portions and potholes along the highway. This poses safety risks, especially for motorists who are using two-wheeler vehicles.
The dry run officially commenced last March 9 and was slated to end on March 19, 2023. But with the patching works that still needed to be done, the MMDA is giving the MC another week of dry run.
Artes sees the extended dry run as a good thing as it will pave the way for motorists to learn more about the exclusive MC lane policy. The policy states that motorcycles plying the Commonwealth Avenue should stay on MC lane located on the third lane from the sidewalk.
There are still patching works needed to be done
Moreover, the policy aims to reduce motorcycle-related road crash incidents, as well as ensure smooth traffic flow along the highway.
From March 9 to March 16, the MMDA flagged down a total of 9,757 motorists violating the exclusive MC policy. The majority of these were private vehicles as the government recorded 7,584 violators. Meanwhile, the rest of the 2,173 violators were motorcyclists.
“We opt to continue the dry run of the exclusive motorcycle lane along Commonwealth Ave. from Elliptical Road to Doña Carmen, and vice versa, until March 26. In coordination with the DPWH, their patch works in the area will continue to address the issues on the said road,” said Artes.
The motorcycle lane aims to reduce accidents
In addition to the ongoing patch works, the MMDA will also install reflectors and solar street lamps to improve visibility in the area. In turn, these additions can aid the exclusive MC lane policy in further improving safety along Commonwealth Avenue.
