The third lane will be dedicated to motorcycles.

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) announced that it will establish an exclusive motorcycle lane along Commonwealth Avenue.

The motorcycle lane plan along Commonwealth Avenue is a go

In a report by the MMDA, the motorcycle lane along the said thoroughfare is one of the plans that was agreed upon in its recently-concluded two-day Motorcycle Consultation Workshop. The workshop was attended by various government agencies, including public utility vehicle (PUV) and motorcycle rider groups.

To jump-start the project, the motorcycle lane plan will be presented to the Metro Manila Council, which is composed of the 17 mayors of the National Capital Region (NCR). It is an initiative of the agency to improve traffic management in the region, especially now that the daily average number of vehicles plying EDSA has surpassed pre-pandemic levels.

The agency aims to make roads safer for motorcycle riders

MMDA Acting Chairman Carlo Dimayuga III said that the innermost lane will remain exclusive for bicycle riders thanks to the Department of Transportation’s (DOTr) efforts to expand its bike lane program nationwide. Next to it will be a PUV lane, which will be allocated for buses and jeepneys. The proposed motorcycle lane will be on the third lane, while the rest will be dedicated to private vehicles.

Not only will the motorcycle lane provide improved traffic flow along Commonwealth Avenue but it will also keep motorcycle riders safe. As said earlier, the daily average number of vehicles on the road is increasing, which leads to higher chances of road incidents. Factors such as lower quarantine restrictions and face-to-face classes reopening cause the increase in traffic.

The Commonwealth motorcycle lane is expected to be accomplished next month

The MMDA has yet to disclose the full details of the motorcycle lane such as the rules, regulations, and penalties (if any). But at least, the agency shows that it hears the concerns of Filipino motorists including motorcycle groups that support the proposal.

The agency is eyeing to implement the motorcycle lane along Commonwealth by November this year.
