The Land Transportation Office (LTO) is set to conduct a probe into dilapidated vehicles that managed to get registered despite not meeting roadworthiness and safety standards. This was according to a statement posted on the agency’s Facebook page.

LTO Chief Assistant Secretary Teofilo Guadiz III says that his office has been made aware of the issue, and has reassured the public that those responsible will be held to account.
“We will not tolerate this kind of illegal activity and I assure the public that heads will roll,” he stressed.
A recent viral video showed a rundown truck that had its registration updated for this year. This was despite the vehicle’s safety violations including an improvised windshield made of building windows, broken headlamps, one missing turn signal, a front bumper held together by wires, and a generally rusted appearance.

The video also showed public utility jeepneys (PUJs) being apprehended by Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) personnel for various violations. These include being illegally parked in makeshift terminals, emitting black smoke, and having insufficient lighting.
Following public reaction over the seeming irregularities in enforcing the LTO’s policies, Guadiz vowed to cleanse the agency’s ranks.
“Aside from our efforts to improve our services to the motoring public, the LTO is also relentless in its transformation journey to rid the Agency of scalawags and other misfits. We are doing our best to transform the LTO to become not only efficient but also corruption-free,” he said.

“We would also like to thank the public, the netizens for being highly vigilant in helping the LTO cleanse its ranks. The LTO will get to the bottom of this, and we assure the public that those who will be found guilty will be prosecuted and removed from government service. They have no place in the LTO,” Guadiz added.
