DPWH, DOTr open more bike lanes in Metro Manila

Last year, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) inaugurates the 313-km Metro Manila Bike Lane Network. With the eco-friendly benefits the bike lane is delivering, the agency, together with the Department of Transportation (DOTr), opened more bike lanes in Metro Manila.

The cities of Marikina, Parañaque, Muntinlupa, and Las Piñas have received a total of 66.1-km bike lane networks. It consists of a 17.2-km bike lane in the Marikina Bike Lane Network, covering the 8.72-km General Ordoñez Avenue, the 1.90-km Liwasang Kalayaan, the 3.92-km J. Molina, Scarlet, and Russet Streets, and the 2.64-km Park Creek.

Meanwhile, the other 48.90-km in the South Manila Bike Lane Network covers the 16.87-km Quirino Avenue to San Antonio Avenue via NAIA road, Ninoy Aquino Road, and Parañaque-Sucat Road, the 21.83-km Carlos P. Garcia Ext. to Bridgeway Avenue via Diego Cera Avenue and Alabang-Zapote Road, and the 10.20-km Investment Drive to Portofino Heights via Daang Hari Road.

A greener mode of transportation

To keep cyclists safe, the new bike lanes are installed with reflectorized thermoplastic pavement markings, bike lane separators, bike racks, and road signages. Moreover, the bike lanes are classified as Class 3, or Shared Roadway, where part of the roadway may be shared with motor vehicles.

Not only does the added bike lanes help lower carbon emission from motor vehicles, but they can also aid Filipinos in the rising fuel prices. The agency regards bicycles as a better and healthier alternative mode of transportation.

Aside from Metro Manila, the DPWH has also brought its sustainable efforts to Mindanao with the opening of a 55-km bike lane in Davao City last year. These bike lanes are seen with great importance as the project can hasten economic recopies by promoting road safety and the importance of road sharing.
