According to the DOTr Secretary, cyclists in the said city can be assured that the new bike lane dedicated to them has its own safe space and is protected. To keep it maintained, he asks cyclists, motorists, and pedestrians to use the bike lanes properly and respect everyone.

White and green pavement markings, signages, bollards, bike symbols, solar studs, and concrete delineators are installed along the bike lane to provide safety for users. Bike racks are also provided to help cyclists secure their bikes.

With a project cost of Php 145 million, the bike lane network spans across 14 road sections within Davao City to include Quimpo Boulevard, Roxas Avenue, Sandawa Road, Quirino Avenue, Quezon Avenue, Dr. A. Gahol Street, E. Jacinto Extension, F. Torres Street, Mabini Street, Porras Street, Loyola Street, Inigo Street, and Decasio Street.

Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio expressed her gratitude towards the DOTr and Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) for including her city in the country’s bike lane project.

“By providing Davaoenos with bicycle lanes, they are able to safely maximize usage of their bicycles whether as a mode of transportation for work or business or as a means for exercise and leisure activities,“ said Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio.

“Biking is a key mechanism in the fulfillment of the city’s sustainable and renewable goals,” she concluded.

The recently-opened 55-km bike lane in Davao is part of the DOTr’s 535-km bike lane nationwide project that also includes key areas such as Metro Manila and Metro Cebu. As of this writing, the government agency has completed around 497-km of its bike lane nationwide.

These bike lanes will not only provide cyclists with safer routes, but help reduce carbon emissions from motor vehicles. DOTr Assistant Secretary Steve Pastor also added that the bike lane project will help hasten economic recovery by championing road safety and the importance of road sharing with the establishment of bike facilities.
