MG Philippines could be looking to add another model to its lineup after reports suggest that the MG GT has already arrived on our shores.

MG GT

As a brief background, the MG GT was launched as the all-new MG 5 in China last 2020. The sportier appearance over the predecessor's more mature-looking design is as clear as day. While the full details about the PH-spec MG GT are still unclear, let's see what we can expect from the model.

Let’s start with the dimensions. The MG GT is 4,675 mm long, 1,842 mm wide, and 1,480 mm high. With those in mind, the sportier model is larger in all aforementioned areas than the outgoing model save for the height. It is also longer and wider than the Toyota Corolla Altis, which is already in compact sedan territory.

Style is underscored in the next-gen model

The MG GT is categorized as a subcompact sedan that should be positioned above the MG 5 in the local lineup. If the market strategy looks familiar, MG Philippines already offers something similar with the MG ZS and ZS-T, as well as the MG RX5 and HS.

As for the powertrain, the MG GT is available with a 1.5-liter turbocharged mill in overseas markets, making similar power figures as the segment favorite, the Honda Civic. However, reports say that the model will be offered as the Alpha trim instead of Trophy.

The MG GT is one sporty-looking sedan

This means that the same 1.5-liter naturally-aspirated power unit found in the MG 5 should power the GT, delivering 112 horsepower and 150 Nm of torque. The use of a continuously variable transmission (CVT) is also expected instead of a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission on the turbocharged GT.

Rumors suggest that the MG GT Alpha will come with a price tag of Php 995,888. That price is still very competitive even when compared to the top-of-the-line variants of other subcompact sedans in the local market that usually breach the P1-million mark.
