The upcoming vehicle is being developed for the European market.

The CyberE electric hatchback is intended to be the first global electric vehicle by MG, with an increasing focus on international markets rather than on its home market of China.

MG is prioritizing overseas markets in developing the CyberE electric hatchback

A report by Car News China released patent images from the Chinese automaker of the EV currently under development, showing a typical hatchback exterior design that leans more on the conservative side. It has been spied undergoing testing in Hungary, lending credence to the impression that the model is aimed at European customers.

The model is part of four planned EVs under the MG Cyber series, which includes the anticipated MG Cyberster sports car as well as the MG CyberS and MG CyberX, both of which are sport utility vehicles.

At a recent product planning internal presentation, MG reportedly described the development of the CyberE as “based on the extensive global market research and aimed at the needs of overseas customers.”

According to the automaker, it will be benchmarked against the Volkswagen ID.3 compact EV which is currently sold in Europe. Apart from Germany, the ID.3 is manufactured in China under Volkswagen’s partnership with SAIC Motor Corporation Ltd., which also owns the MG brand.

The CyberE will reportedly use a new EV platform that can accommodate Level 3 autonomous driving. Among other features that MG mentions are a “smart cockpit” interior and 5G interconnection technology.

As for the powertrain, the CyberE is expected to use a propulsion system similar to that used by the Marvel R, an electric compact crossover developed by SAIC in cooperation with Chinese multinational technology firm Huawei. This comprises either a dual- or tri-motor setup rated at 288 and 284 horsepower, respectively.

The MG CyberE is scheduled to be launched in both China and Europe within the year, with exports to the European market expected to start in the fourth quarter. A concept version could premiere at the Beijing Auto Show in March 2022.
