Hyundai Motor Group has launched various initiatives to expand sustainability in its business portfolio. Among the latest of these is the signing of a new memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Michelin to develop next-generation tires for premium electric vehicles (EVs).
The partnership is back to develop next-gen EV tires
This follows the first 5-year partnership of the two companies to develop an exclusive tire for the Ioniq 5 signed last November 2017. Now that the Group has developed even more innovative products, the new partnership is expected to reach new heights with the goal to reduce carbon emissions and support sustainability.
“This partnership with Michelin will result in real innovations in tire technology, solidifying Hyundai Motor Group’s position as a leader in the smart mobility industry,” said Hyundai Motor Group Vice President Bong-soo Kim.
Over the next three years, the partnership will jointly develop to innovate eco-friendly tires by using more eco-friendly materials. The tires will be used by the Group’s next-gen EV models which are slated to be equipped with a real-time tire pressure monitoring system, and aim to provide improved ride comfort and reduced road noise.
Both parties look to introduce eco-friendly solutions in the industry
The next-gen tire project is seen with more significance now that Hyundai ended the production of Ioniq. It will become a new sub-brand under Hyundai, focusing on the development of fully-electric powered models, hybrids, and plug-in hybrids. By 2024, the new sub-brand will release its first-ever 7-seater model called the Ioniq 7.
“By fully leveraging our mobility technology and Michelin’s tire expertise, we are confident in our ability to achieve ground-breaking innovations in tire performance enhancement and create synergies in this organic collaboration,” added Kim.
Hyundai Motor Group aims to achieve two million annual global EV sales by 2030. With the renewed partnership, one can say that many of the EV units that Hyundai expects to sell will be utilizing next-gen tires made of sustainable components.
