Starting with the sixth generation Honda Civic, the Type R variant for sale in various markets has always denoted a more performance-oriented bent on the compact car’s range. The current iteration is no exception, and Honda has announced it will be putting the upcoming Type R through its paces on the famed Nürburgring.

Images released by the carmaker show the hot hatch wearing primarily red camouflage that covers even the ‘H’ badges on the grille and hubcaps, but the form of the eleventh-generation model is unmistakable. The same LED headlamps flank a noticeably larger grille and revised lower intake, both of which feature a mesh backing which gives the fascia a more aggressive appearance over the standard version.
The large red Brembo brake calipers peek out from multi-spoke wheels that are mounted on Michelin Pilot Sport 4 radials. Heading out back, the combination rear lamps seem to have been revised, with the wing spoiler now mounted higher up on the C-pillar than before, sporting a flatter profile. The center-mounted triple exhaust has been carried over from the previous generation, with a twist as the central tip is now bigger.

Overall, the new Type R currently in the works features a less busy-looking aesthetic, compared to its predecessor which bordered on overkill. Honda is keeping the specifications of the car under wraps for now, but what has been confirmed is that a manual gearbox will be the sole transmission option.
Contrary to initial rumors that a 400-horsepower hybrid motor and all-wheel drivetrain will be standard on the upcoming hot hatch, reports now suggest that the powertrain will evolve from the existing 2.0-liter turbocharged engine and front-wheel-drive. However, it will be the last Honda in Europe to run exclusively on a combustion engine when it arrives in 2022.

The outgoing Type R in pre-production guise set a record in 2017 for the fastest front-drive car on the planet in the Nürburgring, going on to achieve similar feats in other renowned circuits. Let’s see if the upcoming model will be able to top those once it makes its global premiere.
