We could see more Dolphin and Tang EVs on the road.

BYD has reached an agreement with Ayala Corporation that positions AC Motors as its official Philippine distributor. This could turn around the underwhelming EV presence of the Chinese automaker that has been around the country for quite some time now.

BYD joins the AC Motors family

AC Motors has gained experience in managing renowned brands like Kia, Volkswagen, Honda, and Isuzu. As such, BYD can benefit from the company’s network and resources to reach more prospective EV buyers.

The new distributorship will also strengthen the company’s campaign to expand electrification in the country.

“This collaboration between one of the Philippines’ largest multi-brand automotive groups and the world’s premier EV brand aligns perfectly with our vision of propelling the future of mobility in our nation,” said AC Motors Head Jaime Alfonso Zobel de Ayala.

The new distributorship aims to expand electrification in the country

Under Ayala’s distributorship, BYD will be selling EVs including the Han luxury sedan, Tang seven-seater, and Dolphin compact hatchback.

While pricing has yet to be disclosed, the BYD Dolphin is positioned as one of the most affordable EVs Filipinos can buy. With a 44.9 kW battery, the hatchback EV can deliver a range of 400 km and reach a top speed of 130 km/h. It can also make 94 horsepower and 180 Nm of torque.

By the end of the year, the automaker is looking to add another member to the family with the ATTO 3.

“These compelling vehicles cater to distinct customer segments, allowing us to champion EV adoption among a broad spectrum of customers. Leveraging BYD’s global prominence in the EV domain and its successful ventures in other Southeast Asian markets, AC Motors aims to cultivate a similar level of esteem and significance for the brand within the Philippines,” added Zobel de Ayala.

The two should leverage each other's strengths

Aside from the model lineup, changes will also be made in the leadership role. AC Motors Automobile Group President Antonio “Toti” Zara III will lead BYD as its president and CEO while keeping his position at Ayala’s automotive arm. He said the company plans to build 12 to 13 BYD dealerships within the next 12 months.
