The ASEAN-NCAP Grand Prix Award is a biannual event for the New Car Assessment Program for Southeast Asian Countries (ASEAN NCAP). It is organized by ASEAN-NCAP to recognize and award some of the safest cars that made a mark in the Southeast Asian automotive market.
The first ASEAN-NCAP Grand Prix Award was held in 2014 in Kuching, Sarawak. It was followed in 2016 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and the third ceremony was held in Karawang, Indonesia in 2018. Initially, the fourth ASEAN-NCAP Grand Prix Award was supposed to be held last year but was moved to February 16, 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The event was moved this February due to the pandemic
Last ASEAN-NCAP Grand Prix Award in 2018, the Hyundai IONIQ Hybrid won the Best Safety Performance award, competing against the likes of Toyota C-HR and Honda CR-V. Meanwhile, Toyota vehicles such as the Vios and Rush bagged the Continuous Safety Improvement award.
With the continuous advancement of safety technologies, whether in driver assistance systems or more rigid structures, it’s hard to predict which models will end up at the top of the fourth ASEAN-NCAP Grand Prix Award. As such, witnessing a five star-rating from newer models is not uncommon these days.
The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV got a 5-star rating from ASEAN-NCAP last year
We could be seeing the new 2021 Isuzu mu-X in the final list as it recently bagged a five-star rating from ASEAN-NCAP with a final score of 86.81 out of 100. The emerging MG ZS subcompact crossover also received a five-star rating from ASEAN-NCAP with an overall score of 81.00 out of 100.
ASEAN-NCAP is calling all car manufacturers to submit nominations of their respective models so they can be eligible for the upcoming award event. The deadline for the submission of nominations is on January 22, 2021.
