Toyota has unleashed the second-generation Wigo small hatchback in Indonesia, where the nameplate is currently marketed as the Agya. The new Toyota Wigo model is launched in two variants: the base G and the higher-spec GR Sport.
“The all-new Agya is a manifestation of Toyota’s commitment to carrying out the vision of continuous improvement for products marketed in Indonesia and presenting ever-better cars to meet growing customer needs, including for sporty seekers and motorsport enthusiasts,” said Hiroyuki Ueda, president-director of PT Toyota-Astra Motor (TAM).
“Toyota is increasing the value that is the advantage of this hatchback by embedding Toyota’s latest technology based on a sophisticated concept of a human-centered approach,” he added.
The automaker has sold over 320,000 units in Indonesia since the first-generation Wigo was introduced there in September 2013, and it plans to sustain the model’s reputation as the first choice for customers looking for their first car. Meanwhile, the GR Sport trim targets those who want a more dynamic driving experience.
Exterior
Dimensions of the new Wigo comprise 3,760mm in length, 1,665mm in width, and 1,505mm in height on a 2,525mm wheelbase. These effectively make it longer and wider than the outgoing model while sitting closer to the ground. The changes are on account of the Wigo’s shift to the Daihatsu New Global Architecture A (DNGA-A) platform that also underpins the Avanza and Raize.

The exterior is largely the same as its rebadged Perodua Axia counterpart in Malaysia, although the Toyota model sports a wider trapezoidal grille surrounded by different LED headlamps. On the GR Sport, the vertically oriented LED foglamps on the front bumper are highlighted by more aggressive housings, accompanied by a GR badge in front.
At the sides, the 2023 Wigo features a new character line running through the pull-out door handles, together with a more prominent crease rising on the rear fender arches. The GR Sport sports a black contrast roof that terminates in a rear spoiler above the tailgate. A set of 14-inch wheels is standard on the new Wigo G, while the GR Sport wears 15-inch alloys.
Interior
Inside, the new Wigo still offers a cabin that seats five occupants, albeit with a more streamlined design compared to the previous model. The increase in wheelbase is expected to provide more elbow and knee room for passengers.

Meanwhile, the dashboard has been revamped using a horizontal visual theme, this time doing away with the circular air vents in favor of trapezoidal ones. Even the center console appears more elevated, and luggage space behind the second-row seats has been expanded by 610mm.
Tech & Safety
The new Wigo makes the jump from manual rotary switches to digital controls for the air-conditioning system. Beyond the multi-function steering wheel lies an available digital gauge cluster, while the touchscreen head unit is now a freestanding 7-inch display that apparently supports Apple CarPlay for connectivity.

Up to six airbags are offered on the new Wigo as standard, along with anti-lock brakes, stability control, pedestrian protection tech, and seatbelt reminders. Driver-assist features such as Lane Departure Warning and Automatic Emergency Braking are available, allowing the new Wigo to score four out of five stars in crash tests conducted by the ASEAN New Car Assessment Program (ASEAN NCAP).
Engine & Drivetrain
Powering the new Wigo’s trim levels is a 1.2-liter 3-cylinder gasoline engine rated at 88 horsepower and 112 Nm of torque, the same power unit used in base variants of the Raize. Toyota claims that the new engine is more fuel-efficient yet produces higher torque than a 4-cylinder motor with the same displacement.

Transferring the power to the front wheels is a choice of either a 5-speed manual or a dual-mode CVT, the latter replacing the 4-speed torque converter automatic. The CVT is reportedly the world’s first split-gear CVT system, combining both belt and gear drives.
As is typical of its designation, the GR Sport benefits from revised steering and suspension to make the car sportier and more responsive in terms of handling.
Pricing
No pricing information has been confirmed for the Indonesian-market 2023 Toyota Agya yet, although the carmaker says it will not go beyond IDR 250 million (Php 898,000) for the GR Sport trim.
