Toyota, together with Subaru, officially takes the covers off the second-generation 86 via an online live-streaming event. Like its Subaru sibling, the new 86 now comes with a larger engine, as well as a longer wheelbase length. The new GR 86 also bears a sharper, new exterior design, which mirrors the new Subaru BRZ.

Exterior
As mentioned, the new Toyota GR 86 has received some size changes as well. Its wheelbase now measures 2,576 mm, and its overall length is now at 4,265 mm. It also has a height of 1,311 mm.
Overall, this means this version is longer and lower than the outgoing model. The longer wheelbase might provide some gains in terms of stability at speed, and more ride comfort. Moreover, it might also mean that the new GR 86 is a better drift-car platform than the previous version.
The contrasting black-colored pieces adds to the sportiness of the car
Style-wise, the new 86 features sportier features on every corner of the car. It is however, slighty less angular than its Subaru brother. The sides and the front end also received functional vents that add a more aggressive look. The new vents on the sides of the front bumper also allow air to flow around the wheels.
While the new Subaru BRZ has received a grille with upturned corners that gives it a "smiling" appearance, the Toyota GR 86's grille is slightly larger and has downturned corners. This provides a contrast between the two, and further solidifying the "red-oni, blue-oni" dynamic between the GR 86 and the BRZ.
The rear of the 2022 Toyota GR 86
The sides of the car also received some sills for more downforce. The rear was also given a makeover with a pair of new taillights that are positioned higher, and a new ducktail, trunk spoiler.
Of course, the dual-exhaust setup makes a return, but the black-colored pieces that surround them are more pronounced in shape.
Interior
Inside, the new Toyota 86 also received a couple of changes. The center stack hump is no longer a hump, and the dashboard looks flatter and better arranged as well. The round air-conditioning side vents do make a return, but these work well with the new 86’s overall interior design.

Moreover, regarding the interior, the leather sport seats and the steering wheel have red-colored stitching to add a splash of color to the otherwise predominantly dark-colored interior.

Tech and Safety
The new 86 also gets a seven-inch digital gauge cluster with numerous display modes and an eight-inch touchscreen head unit. Interestingly enough, the automatic GR 86 variants will also be getting the latest version of the Subaru EyeSight driver-assist features.
Engine
The GR 86's 2.4-liter, naturally-aspirated boxer-four engine
Underneath the hood of the all-new Toyota 86 is the same 2.4-liter mill found on the new BRZ. It is mated to a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic. The said engine is rated to make a maximum of 232 horsepower at 7,000 rpm, and a maximum torque of 250 Nm.
Interestingly, the GR 86 makes 4 more horsepower than the initially released Subaru BRZ for the US market, which in turn makes 228 horsepower. The Japanese version BRZ gets the same output as the new GR 86. Just like the first-generation 86, the new model is a rear-wheel-drive.
Pricing
Subaru PH has already confirmed that the new BRZ is coming. So is the GR 86 coming too?
