Toyota’s MPV gets an all-new design, and more.

After a series of leaked details, the 2022 Toyota Avanza officially made its debut. Toyota’s MPV is now available in Indonesia, which gives us an idea of the all-new Avanza’s imminent arrival in the Philippine market.

Featuring a significant design overhaul inside and out, the all-new 2022 Toyota Avanza looks ready to square up with its rival in the MPV segment, which is the Mitsubishi Xpander. The Indonesian-spec Avanza is offered in four variants with the Veloz trim also on offer.

Exterior

The exterior of the 2022 Toyota Avanza features a bolder and more aggressive design. The design overhaul that’s most noticeable is its new grille, which is way larger, and looks sharper than the outgoing model. The Avanza is also fitted with LED headlights (depending on the variant), and an angular bumper that houses the fog lamps.

The side profile of the all-new Toyota Avanza is integrated with a crisp character line. It also has a power-folding side mirror, and it sits on a set of 16-inch alloy wheels. While the Veloz trim gets a larger set of 17-inch alloy wheels.

Similar to the Avanza’s fascia, the rear gets a major design update featuring a more refined styling as compared to the old model. It is equipped with distinctive taillights that look more well-designed compared to the current Avanza we have in the market today. The 2022 Toyota Avanza also has a revamped rear bumper.

Dimensions-wise, the all-new model is 205mm longer at 4,395mm, 90mm wider at 1,750mm, and 5mm higher at 1,700mm. The Veloz even gets a longer length rated at 4,475mm. The 2022 Toyota Avanza has a ground clearance of 205mm.

Interior

The Avanza gets a revamped interior layout

The 2022 Toyota Avanza gets a new interior layout featuring a more premium-looking cabin compared to the outgoing model. The updated dashboard layout makes the Avanza’s interior have a modern feel. Placed right at the center is the floating-type 9-inch infotainment touchscreen (depending on the variant) with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. You’ll also see that the aircon vents have been redesigned as well as the steering wheel.

The Avanza’s automatic gear lever now looks different as well. It doesn’t come with the usual zigzag pattern as it now features a straight pattern. As an MPV, the all-new Avanza can still accommodate up to seven individuals.

New seat configuration

The first row seats of the Avanza can be folded back to link with the second-row seats. Also, the second-row seats can be folded to the front to provide a long sofa-like space for the third-row seats.

Tech & Safety

When it comes to tech features, the all-new top-spec Avanza is integrated with a 7-inch digital-type instrument cluster, 9-inch infotainment touchscreen, electronic parking brake with auto hold, automatic climate control, and a 360-degree camera.

Safety-wise, the Avanza is equipped with the standard features you can expect from a modern car. It has an anti-lock brake system with electronic brakeforce distribution, stability control, and seatbelt reminder for all three rows.

While the top-of-the-line Toyota Avanza gets six airbags, a pre-collision system, a rear cross-traffic alert, blind-spot monitoring, lane departure assist, pedal misoperation control, and front departure alert.

Engine & Drivetrain

As for what’s under the hood, Toyota is offering the all-new Avanza with the same two engines as the outgoing version. As such, the 2022 Avanza is powered by either a 1.3-liter or 1.5-liter gasoline engine.

The 1.3-liter gasoline power unit delivers 98 hp and 121 Nm of torque while the 1.5-liter engine produces 106 hp and 137 Nm. Transmission options for the all-new Toyota Avanza could either be a five-speed manual or a continuously variable transmission (CVT) with sequential mode. Power is sent to the front wheels, and the 2022 Avanza now comes with a unibody construction as compared to the old ladder-frame design. That said, it now sits on Daihatsu New Global Architecture.
