Car safety is one of the important aspects to consider when buying a vehicle. Automotive manufacturers are constantly finding ways on how to improve car safety as it can prevent injuries and even death in an event of a crash or accident.

The New Car Assessment Program (NCAP) is put in place to help consumers in determining how safe a certain vehicle is. The recent data released by the Euro NCAP listed the Toyota Yaris Cross among the safest cars tested in Europe.

The Yaris Cross was named Best in Class among the Small MPV vehicles in Europe. It managed to get a five-star safety rating as it posted notable scores in Euro NCAP’s crash test.

In detail, the Toyota Yaris Cross scored the following in each of the four areas of assessment: 86 percent on Adult Occupant Protection, 84 percent on Child Occupant Protection, 78 percent on Vulnerable Road Users (Pedestrian Safety), and 81 percent on Safety Assist.

The Euro NCAP Best in Class award is given to cars that perform best overall in a specific vehicle category. To determine the Best in Class in a certain vehicle category, the Euro NCAP calculates the weighted sum of the scores in each of the four areas of assessment: Adult Occupant, Child Occupant, Pedestrian, and Safety Assist.

“2021 was a tough year for the car industry: a shortage of parts, semiconductors in particular, was the sting in the tail of the Covid crisis…Still, we saw quite a number of new car models coming to the market…and many of them achieving five-star ratings despite the demanding requirements,” Euro NCAP Secretary General Dr. Michiel van Ratingen said.

The Yaris Cross was once reported to be arriving in the Philippine market. Early last year, reports about the local launch of the said vehicle surfaced as dealers of Toyota Motor Philippines (TMP) have reportedly placed orders for the Yaris Cross.

Since then, TMP has yet to give an update in regards to the local launch of the vehicle. The Yaris Cross is a subcompact crossover that sits between the Raize and CH-R in Toyota Japan.

While we wait for an update about the Yaris Cross, TMP is reportedly bringing in the Raize this year as its challenger in the growing subcompact crossover segment in the local market. It will go up against the likes of the Kia Stonic, Volkswagen T-Cross, Geely Coolray, among others.
