The UN Office of Coordination for Humanitarian Affairs (UN OCHA) said that there were at least five regions in the Philippines that were hit the hardest by Typhoon Odette. These includes Caraga, Western Visayas, Central Visayas, Eastern Visayas, and Mimaropa.
Nissan LEAF transforms to a mobile phone charging station
Cebu is among the places that saw the destructive power of the typhoon, causing power outages in many different areas. With no electricity, individuals living in the affected communities have no means of communication since their mobile phones have already run out of battery.
The situation prompted Nissan Philippines to deploy its resources to help the typhoon-stricken communities in Cebu. The car company sent its Power Mover vehicle-to-load accessory to Cebu in order to utilize the Nissan LEAF electric vehicle (EV) as a mobile energy source to supply power in areas where there is no electricity.
The Nissan LEAF charging up several mobile phones
Through its coordination with Nissan Cebu South dealership, and Cebu City Councilor Nestor Archival, Nissan PH said that the LEAF was used as a mobile phone charging station. This allowed individuals to fully charge their mobile phones in order to communicate with their families and loved ones.
The Nissan LEAF transforming into a mobile phone charging station was also made possible with Councilor Archival’s ecohouse that features solar power. It is used to charge the Nissan LEAF so that it has sufficient battery juice to continue supplying power to individuals who need to charge up their mobile phones.
Councilor Archival shared that the Nissan LEAF has already charged more than 1,000 mobile phones while using around 10 to 20 percent of the EV’s battery. The councilor added that he will continue to do the said initiative until the power comes back in their communities.
The Nissan LEAF powers up typhoon-stricken communities in Cebu
Nissan PH president and managing director Atsushi Najima said that the company’s communication line remains open, and it has been keeping in touch with its dealerships and communities in areas affected by the typhoon. Najima also feels honored in regards to the Nissan LEAF’s contribution in helping affected communities.
“We have been keeping in touch with our dealerships and communities in areas affected by the typhoon where communication signals permit. I have very recently visited these areas and I am truly saddened by the reports about the damage this natural disaster has caused,” Najima said.
“I am honored to contribute to this small effort. This inspires me to bring in more sustainable innovations and build partnerships where the Nissan LEAF can be of service to society through vehicle-to-anything technology,” Najima added.
Nissan LEAF electric vehicle
The Nissan LEAF is equipped with an electric motor that can put out 150 hp and 320 Nm of torque. It also comes with a 40-kWh lithium-ion battery pack that features up to a 311-kilometer range. The battery can be charged with your bog-standard wall outlet, and doing so will fill it up fully in 15 to 18 hours. However, a quick charging station cuts down the LEAF’s charging time down to just 40 minutes to an hour.
