Honda CR-V Black Edition is now also in Malaysia. Should the PH get it?

The short answer is, ‘Yes.’

Back in August, we shared that story about the Honda CR-V Black Edition in Thailand. For those that missed it, it’s the meaner-looking version of the beloved seven-seater Honda crossover with black-colored trim pieces. It is based on the Thai-spec CR-V 2.4-liter, a variant that’s not sold in the Philippines.

Recently however, Honda Malaysia has also brought in its own CR-V Black Edition. And like the one in Thailand, it features a set of black 18-inch wheels, as well as black trim pieces for the front and rear bumper. Unlike the Thai version though, the Malaysian CR-V Black Edition does get bits of chrome which outline the LED headlamps and surround the front bumper.

It is also entirely black on the inside. Specifically, the air-conditioning vents and the steering wheel trim, among others, are now rendered in piano black trim. Even its center console, dashboard, and door trim pieces are likewise colored in black. The said crossover’s front seats also feature “Black Edition” embroidery, with the entire upholstery dressed in black leather.

Like the Thai-spec version, the Malaysian CR-V Black Edition uses an engine that isn’t available in our local market. This is a 1.5-liter inline-4 VTEC turbo that can make up to 190 horsepower and 243 Nm of torque. Power is then sent to its front wheels via a continuously variable transmission (CVT).

Safety-wise, the CR-V Black Edition also gets the Honda Sensing driver assist safety suite. This includes features like forward collision warning, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, automatic headlamps, and adaptive cruise control.

It also gets convenience features like a power tailgate, a seven-inch touchscreen head unit with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, walk-away auto door locking, and dual-zone automatic air-conditioning, among others.

Of note, the Malaysian CR-V Black Edition is based on the mid-spec TC-P 2WD variant. In the said country, the CR-V Black Edition is priced at RM 161,913 (Php 1,972,455). That’s RM 4,298, or around Php 50,000 more than the CR-V TC-P.

Do note though that the prices mentioned above do not take into account other fees like registration, insurance, etc.

So, should Honda Philippines also get the CR-V Black Edition? Well, we think so. It would spice up the local CR-V price Philippines lineup, and would provide the said model a dash of youthful energy. A dark and brooding kind of youth, to be exact.

The question now is, which variant would the hypothetical Philippine-spec CR-V Black Edition be based on? Maybe the top-spec Honda CR-V SX perhaps?
