In honor of Shelby American’s 60th anniversary next year, the company revived the renowned Ford Shelby GT500KR Mustang. The GT500KR (KR stands for King of the Road) is a product born from the partnership between American automaker Ford and Shelby American way back in the 60s.

Bonded by a rich history, the two American companies have a strong relationship. In 1966, Shelby American assisted Ford in defeating Italian powerhouse Ferrari at the 24 Hours of Le Mans with the iconic Ford GT40. Two years later, the first Shelby GT500KR was produced which makes 335 hp, with rumors stating that it actually makes 400 hp.
The first-generation Shelby GT500KR Mustang had a long hiatus before being brought back again in 2008. That time, the nameplate received its first supercharger mounted on its V8 engine that makes 540 hp, which is 40 more hp than the regular GT500. Only a total of 1,000 units were produced but added 712 units the following year due to high demand.
Now in its third-generation model
“Sixty years ago, Shelby American and Ford Motor Company collaborated on their first car, the Shelby Cobra. That relationship resulted in racing championships, victories over Ferrari at Le Mans, and amazingly Shelby cars based on the Ford Mustang,” said Shelby American CEO Joe Conway.
Now, for the third time around, the Ford Shelby GT500KR Mustang is more powerful than ever. It is powered by a 5.2-liter supercharged V8 engine that churns out 900 hp. Performance features such as high volume supercharger intercooler, high volume supercharger heat exchanger, Shelby by Borla cat-back exhaust system, and Performance spec tires are installed on the returning sports car.
Roaring with 900 horsepower
Weight-cutting measures are included as well with the use of Shelby carbon fiber hood with functional air vents, carbon fiber front splitter and rear diffuser, and carbon fiber Gurney flap. Included as options are Shelby wide-body, Le Mans style over top stripes, rear seat delete with harness bar, among others.
“My grandfather, Carroll Shelby was often called the ‘King of the Road’ for pushing the performance envelope both on and off the track. He was proud of his company’s relationship with Ford Motor Company and was passionate about supporting philanthropic causes,” said Board Member of Carroll Shelby International Aaron Shelby.

The production of the Ford Shelby GT500KR Mustang will begin in Las Vegas in Q1 2022. Shelby American is also allowing owners of 2020 and 2021 model years of the Shelby GT500 to get their vehicles transformed into a KR as of Feb. 1, 2022.
