2023 Ford Ranger Drag Race: V6 versus bi-turbo four-cylinder

How quicker is the Ford Ranger V6 versus its Biturbo four-cylinder counterpart? 

The 2023 Ford Ranger is already out in several markets. Recently, Ford PH launched the local version. Unlike the Australian market though, we did not receive the V6 version. But how does it perform against the 2.0-liter biturbo? To answer that, the folks at CarExpert, an Aussie publication, ventured out and pitted the two Ranger models against each other in a drag race. 

Two versions of the Ford Ranger go neck-a-neck

But first off, the tale of the tape. On the Wildtrak side, we’ve got the familiar 2.0-liter biturbo diesel engine as mentioned. Like the Philippine Ford Ranger version, the one featured in the drag race can also make 207 horsepower and 500 Nm of torque. It’s also linked to a 10-speed automatic gearbox, and it uses a 4x4 drivetrain. 

On the other side of this duel is the Australian-spec Ranger XLT. And yes, unlike the local version which uses a single turbo 2.0-liter four-banger, this one uses a 3.0-liter V6 turbo diesel mill that can make up to 247 horsepower and 600 Nm of torque. It likewise gets a 10-speed auto tranny, and a 4x4 drivetrain.

Of note, the drag race was done over wet tarmac with both trucks on 4x4-high, and with their traction control systems off. They also did it over a distance of 1/8th of a mile, since they did not have space for a proper quarter-mile race due to weather. 

As expected, the V6 Ranger pulled away early and maintained its lead on the first run. On the second run, the results were largely the same though the four-cylinder Wildtrak performed a bit better by keeping up at the start of the race.  

The third race’s results were also similar, with the V6 pickup truck acquiring an early lead. The V6 Ranger did jump the start so this run was no good. 

On the fourth run, both trucks had their tailgates down. This however, did little to add to their speed. In the end, the Ranger XLT V6 still maintained a lead from the get-go.

For the fastest times recorded, the Wildtrak 2.0-liter Biturbo managed to get a 0-100 km/h time of 9.6 seconds, while the Ranger XLT V6 was a bit faster with its 0-100 km/h at 8.2 seconds. 

Furthermore, the Wildtrak 2.0 Biturbo’s fastest 1/8th mile time was recorded at 10.9 seconds. In turn, the Ranger V6’s fastest 1/8th mile time was 10.3 seconds. 

So, there you have it folks. The V6 Ranger is definitely more powerful and quicker than the 2.0-liter biturbo version by a considerable margin.
