The exclusive motorcycle lane along Commonwealth Avenue is about to happen as the Metro Manila Council (MMC) approved the said proposal. The Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) proposed the exclusive motorcycle lane to improve traffic flow and road safety.
1-Rider Partylist Representative Ramon Rodrigo Gutierrez lauded the MMC for approving the MMDA’s proposed exclusive motorcycle lane along Commonwealth Avenue. Gutierrez noted that the exclusive lane for motorcycles will help reduce road accidents for all motorists.
"We laud and thank the MMC, composed of mayors in the National Capital Region, for agreeing with MMDA that there's a need to create exclusive lanes for riders and other motorists to prevent road accidents," Gutierrez said.
Gutierrez saw the need of providing an exclusive lane for motorcycles since riders are among the most exposed motorists on the road. With the presence of an exclusive lane, riders are seen to have a safer journey.
According to the MMDA Traffic Engineering Center, there were a total of 1,010 recorded accidents involving motorcycles along Commonwealth Avenue from January to August 2022. From the said number, nine incidents were classified as fatal while 557 were considered non-fatal. The data also showed that 444 recorded incidents have caused damage to properties.
The lawmaker added that the exclusive motorcycle lane on Commonwealth Avenue will serve as the testing phase. If it deems good results, Gutierrez said that it could be implemented on other Metro Manila roads. The MMDA previously voiced out that it is also looking to put an exclusive motorcycle lane on EDSA.
"Ang mangyayari dito sa Commonwealth, i-implement natin, testing phase, pag-aaralan kung ito ay talagang helpful sa traffic. Kung talagang mababa ang accident rate at kapag ito ay nangyari at ito ay na-achieve, baka i-replicate sa ibang roads,” Gutierrez shared.
(What will happen here in the Commonwealth is that we will implement [the exclusive motorcycle lane] in a testing phase. We would then study if it is helpful in yielding better traffic flow. If the results show a lower accident rate, we could implement it on other roads.)
