The brand might be testing the waters of the local EV market.

Chery Auto Philippines is bringing in a batch of sample electric vehicles (EV) and hybrids. The brand didn’t indicate that it is selling them here just yet, but this might be an indication that it is trying to dip its toes in the local EV market.

As indicated by Chery Auto, this batch of EVs is comprised of three different models. Two are fully electric rides, while one is a plug-in hybrid. Besides that, no other information about these models was disclosed.

Judging by the picture shared by the brand, there’s a good chance that one is the Chery EQ1. We say that upon considering the shapes bulging out from the hidden car’s fabric cover.

In other markets, the EQ1 is a city car EV two-door, four-seater hatchback. Powering the EQ1 is a 40.3-kWh battery pack. This offers a range of 281 km and a motor output of 75 horsepower. If this Chery EV enters the market, it could then compete against the likes of the Jetour Ice Cream EV. As for the other two, it isn’t clear what they are. For now, we’re guessing that they are compact crossovers.

Of note, this might be the perfect time for Chery to get more into hybrids and fully electric cars. The brand itself is gaining popularity locally, as it already saw a product sales increase of eight percent in the second half of 2023. The Chery Holding Group as a whole, meanwhile, saw a total of 1,063,157 vehicle global sales from January to August 2023.

Introducing more hybrids and EVs may also be a great follow-up to the Chery Tiggo 8 Pro Hybrid which was introduced to the Philippines last year. That’s because bringing in more EVs and hybrids will likewise allow the brand to better incorporate green power into its model lineup, and thus offer its customers sustainable and more environmentally friendly rides.
